A few months ago, David Grisman bought a mandolin from me. It’s true. I never thought that I would be involved in a commercial deal with one of the greatest mandolin players in the world, but on eBay, I’ve had the opportunity to buy and sell an assortment of pretty amazing things to an assortment of equally amazing people — such as David “Dawg” Grisman, who made the winning bid on my 1921 Vega Cylinderback, to my utter delight. I started “doing eBay” back in 1999, lured by the opportunity to add to my antique doll collection. Soon, eBay was turning me into something I had always wanted to become — an antique toy dealer. eBay's ProStores service had an outage on Tuesday evening that knocked merchant websites offline for hours. Customers who use eBay's ProStores service to host their websites will receive a 100 percent credit for any Successful Transaction Fees charged in May 2008 "as a token of our appreciation for their patience and loyalty," according to spokesperson Usher Lieberman. According to a post on the ProStores Announcement board, the issue was caused by a third party vendor that ProStores contracts with for data needs who had an issue with their fire suppression system that affected all ProStores merchants' stores as well as ProStores tech support phone lines By Ina Steiner
eBay users were buzzing over who had submitted the anonymous filing to the Australian regulatory agency that is reviewing eBay's proposed PayPal-only policy. The 38-page submission argued eBay should not be allowed to exclude competing payment methods. However, AuctionBytes reader David Bromage revealed a method that shows the PDF file submission appears to have been created from a Word document titled, "ACCC Submission by Google re eBay Public 2.DOC," indicating the filer was likely Google. (The submission disappeared from the ACCC site on Wednesday evening, presumably so they could edit out the identifying information.) By Ina Steiner

eBay users have been curious to find out who submitted an anonymous filing to the Australian regulatory agency that is reviewing eBay's plan to move to a PayPal only option. The submission says eBay should not be allowed to exclude competing payment methods. An AuctionBytes reader found a 38-page PDF filing that appears to have come from Google. A Word document titled,"ACCC Submission by Google re eBay Public 2.DOC," reveals Google probably did the filing. The submission had been removed from the ACCC site on Wednesday, likely due to privacy reasons. By Mike Sachoff

PayPal customers are up in arms as a series of fresh glitches cost them time and money. Once again, eBay's inability to accurately say when the problem might be fixed is adding insult to injury. The most serious malfunction affects what's known as the "handling_cart," a feature within the PayPal shopping cart that tacks on custom charges for handling, shipping and other services associated with a particular item. On May 15, it suddenly stopped working. The failure has caused many online merchants to lose money each time they use PayPal to sell items that used the feature. As of Tuesday - 12 days after the glitch began - PayPal's support team was still unable to say when it might be fixed. By Dan Goodin

Will eBay's dominance be seriously challenged? Sensis and its iconic Trading Post business has weighed in to the online auctions market with the launch of auctions on tradingpost.com.au, endeavouring to boost revenue and take market share from market leader eBay. The auction site went live on Monday. The Trading Post online auctions site has been in development for 18 months and is rather timely with the current backlash against eBay's new payment structure which will lock users into paying for purchases through its fee-based PayPal service on June 17. Sensis corporate affairs manager Stephen Ronchi said it is a very strong local alternative for Australians to buy and sell. By Kathryn Edwards
