Overstock.com Inc. has signed with global e-commerce solution provider E4X Inc. to handle all of the e-retailer’s international orders as it expands overseas in the third quarter. The closeout merchant will use the vendor’s FiftyOne system, which manages all aspects of an international transaction including multi-currency payments, global logistics and delivery, and post-sale customer support. Overstock.com and E4X will implement what the e-retailer calls international checkout. The e-commerce site will recognize the country of origin of a customer via Internet protocol detection technology.

eBay acknowledged on its corporate blog it has entered into a deal with Buy.com after the news was broken by industry blogger Randy Smythe on Friday. The retailer will move its new and in-season inventory onto its eBay Store in the coming weeks. eBay made an official statement about the partnership deal, which gives Buy.com special pricing. eBay is aggressively using price as a lever to improve the value and selection on eBay.com. Consistent with our goals, we have entered into a partnership with Buy.com to bring their new-in-season merchandise onto eBay.com. We expect to learn a great deal from this partnership and we will build upon the results.

You can buy or sell everything from first editions of obscure romances to baby rattles on eBay. Everything I ever bought on eBay was honestly advertised stuff I didn't need. Fortunately, I was able to resell the stuff I didn't need, including the clunky Palm Pilot modem I bought a decade ago. It's probably still making the rounds somewhere on the auction Web site. I had never met anyone who made a living selling on eBay until a few days ago, when I bumped into a young friend I had encouraged to pursue his dream of becoming a doctor. Alas, he dropped out of medical school because he didn't have the time and money for his wife and two babies. He told me he was selling stuff on eBay and netting 40 grand a year. Not quite a doctor's wage, but not bad, either, considering he has no overhead.

THE deadline for submissions to the competition regulator investigating eBay's PayPal-only payment proposal has been extended for selected parties."Some organisations had a pre-arranged extension (date)," a spokesman for the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) said. He could not name which organisations had asked for more time nor reveal the new deadline.

Small-business owner Barry Fallon was scheduled to appear before the Pennsylvania State Board of Auctioneer Examiners on May 12, 2008, to face charges of conducting an auction on eBay and operating an auction house without a license. Fallon sold his consignment drop-off store in 2007 after regulators required him to get an auctioneer's license to operate the store, which operated as an iSold It franchise. "It would be wonderful if a lot of Pennsylvania eBay Trading Assistants and Power Sellers could attend this hearing in support of all of us," Fallon said.

A winning bid that seems to come from nowhere with just a second or two to go before the close - that's a snipe - and anyone that has more than a casual experience with online auctions has probably seen (or even been a victim of) a snipe or two. While the practice originated with individual buyers manually placing bids as close to the auction close as possible, it's become big business with dozens of companies offering surrogate sniping services for a fee. One such organization is Bidnapper. And according to Daniel and Taylor Abercrombie, partners of Abercrombie Online who own and administer the site, things at Bidnapper are about to change for the bigger as well as the better.
