You open up your favorite mobile Twitter client or use Twitter via SMS to reimburse the person who is going to settle with the waiter. Instead of the @ (reply) or “d” (Direct Message) machine code, a “p” for payment is used instead.

June 18, 2008 - A seemingly unremarkable magnetic-stripe card reader from a software company specializing in payment applications for users of eBay Inc.’s online merchant marketplace and its PayPal payment system is just hitting the market, but it could mark another advance for PayPal into the world of point-of-sale payments. The reader and its companion software are intended to spare PayPal-accepting merchants the tedium of entering card data into their personal computers, according to Andrew Angell, founder of Kansas City, Mo.-based application development firm Angell Eye. But in most respects, Angell’s new system, called USBSwiper, works just like conventional POS card technology—and without the need for the merchant to have a conventional bank card merchant account.

PayPal amended its policy update that goes into effect on July 9 to be clearer about requirements for eBay sellers who ship internationally. PayPal made the change after an AuctionBytes article reported the original update, which had read, "Section 4.3 is amended so that eBay sellers must accept international PayPal transactions if the eBay listing offers shipping outside the US." PayPal spokesperson Michael Oldenburg said because of bad language of the original policy update, it was modifying the update to be clearer that eBay was not requiring all international shippers to accept PayPal.

It will add a fixed shipping cost for each item a customer adds to her cart. If a customer orders two sleeping bags and one tent the total shipping will be $17.

A deal with a payment processing firm has sparked speculation the firm is to launch its own branded checkout service. Microsoft has signed an agreement with a payment processing firm that experts have said could be a precursor to it launching an online checkout service. The agreement with Symmetric Systems will give the software giant access to the firm's online transactional platform, VitalPay. VitalPay provides regulatory-compliant payment services, including mail and telephone order facilities and card-not-present transactions, to retailers and merchants, as well as travel and airline companies. Microsoft refused to comment on why it had struck the deal with the firm or how it would link Vital Pay's capabilities with its own. But the software vendor has a variety of point-of-sale, customer relationship management (CRM) and web-based software offerings that could potentially integrate an online payment facility with.
